HWMPUT is an option whereby DBPUTs of new entries to a detail set raise the
high-water mark and insert the new entry at the end of the set. When the
HWM reaches the set's capacity, then the delete chain is used when adding
new entries until the set become full. This is opposite of the normal
processing whereby DBPUTs of new entries utilize the delete chain to obtain
an empty slot in the set and when the delete chain is empty, then push the
HWM to add the entry to the end of the set.
There are lots of situations whereby this is useful. Obviously a faster
batch-update is one option. There also has been other discussion about using
this feature to do an 'on-line reorganization'. However, in literially all
cases, if the set is dynamic and entries are removed it still is necessary to
conduct a full-blown reorganization at some point simply for overall
performance reasons.
I believe this is documented on the CD-ROM and also in the August'97
version of
the IMAGE/SQL manual, but I haven't gone looking to confirm.
