ah ha! now i think we're finally getting somewhere! just to catch
up with some other questions being asked in response to my
original question:
 - afaik, rslvconf is set up correctly. it is linked to /etc/resolv.conf
 - it is named/spelled correctly
 - yes, i have a hosts.net file and it is linked *but* i don't want
every entry in our wan in the file -- that's the whole point of dns!

so back to my original question - does ftp know how to use dns?
i think duane is right. anybody else have any thoughts/comments?
