According to an article on TechWeb --

  <http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/comdig/TWB19980612S0003>

that quotes Compaq CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer, the company's strategy for
absorbing Digital Equipment Corporation is to kill the brand name and
move all VMS customers to NT.

This looks to me like a great opportunity for IBM, and possibly for HP as
well. IBM has always exploited FUD marketing, but in this case, the
uncertainty and doubt has a very real basis. The obvious question is
whether HP, which seems to be uncertain exactly what it's selling besides
hardware, can manage to look like a safe harbor to people who are being
forced to change to an inferior solution.
