I found an answer in the HP3000 faq :

:SYSGEN
sysgen> IO
io>md ldev=xxx mode=AUTOREPLY
io>ho
io>e
sysgen>keep

and shutdown

I saw it but not test it !.

     Could someone tell me how to configure a DLT drive for autoreply,   
I'm
     sure it's in SYSGEN, but that syntax is funky, and I can't seem to
     find the syntax in the help system.
