Here's what I hope is a solution to those folks using a Microsoft Mailer -
the ones that produce the WINMAIL.DAT file (which, by the way, *is* the RTF
format of the message and any attachments - yes - any files you send are
attached to the RTF file and not accessible to those who use plain text
mailers).

It's real simple... Create an entry in the address book for HP3000-L (and
anyone else you correspond with which needs only text), and ensure that the
"Send with RTF" is Unchecked. This will ensure that all messages are sent
as Plain Text (even though it may appear as RTF on your screen).

If it's a one-time thing, while the message is open, click File/Properties
in the message menu, and uncheck the "Send as Microsoft RTF..." on the
property sheet - and the message will be sent as plain text.

Plain text is denoted in a MS Mailer as using a Fixed Font like Courier, and
the default for RTF is Arial. If you reply to an HP3000-L message that
comes in as text, then it will go back out as Plain Text. If it comes in as
RTF, it will go back out as RTF (except for Outlook 98, which will ask if
that HP3000-L entry is set up in your address book).

Hope this helps. Since most HP3000-L users use plain text mailers, posts
should be sent in plain text. I've been just as guilty in this too -
usually when I put up a beta copy and all my settings get hosed in some way
or another... but I always set them back when I catch wind of the problem).

Best Regards,
Joe
