Hello all:
Here at Abtech (an independent reseller of refurbished HP 3000 and
9000) the nature of our business puts us in the situation of
recommending or being asked to install "third-party" or "OEM" memory
into many systems.
I would say that about 95% of those that use OEM memory are 9000
users, although the few 3000 users that opt to use it do not seem to
have a problem.
There are, however, support issues:
If you have a problem with your machine, the first thing that HP does
is come out and yank out the third-party hardware. If this fixes the
problem, HP will not "fix" or replace it, as it is "unsupported"
hardware that HP does not recommend using. They may even opt to nail
you with a time and material call, although I have never seen this
happen, since this sort of hardware is not on contract. In a scenario
where all your memory is OEM, and HP takes it all out, the problem
will be fixed--the machine will not come up, but then you used OEM
memory, so tough.
What we end up recommending, however, is to keep your base memory as
HP memory so that you at least have something in there when and if
your system goes down. This way, HP will not be able to blame the
down-time on the memory if there is still a problem.
Of course, much of this also depends on your relationship with your
CE. There have been rumors of some who cast a blind eye to
maintenance customers who use OEM memory...
If you use a third-party support group for your maintenance, I have
never seen OEM memory rejected for maintenance.
By the way, I hope I did not sound "pluggy" at the beginning of this
message. I just wanted to legitimize my statements by showing that we
are indeed in the business of hardware integration and we see this
_all_ the time. But (shameless plug--turn back now!) you can feel
compelled to buy from me nevertheless ;)
Hope this helps,
Dana Collins
