One solution here is DAVE, from Thursby Systems. It's an SMB client for
Macintosh which was reviewed recently and looked very good. There are
several NFS solutions, but I haven't seen any reviews recently. You can
find Thursby at <http://www.thursby.com>.

To access files on our Unix-based systems, I use netatalk, which is a
free AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) server. Two cautions: first, compile
with end-of-line conversion OFF (the default is ON, for some reason).
Second, netatalk tries to make the Unix box look like a true AppleShare
file server, including preserving all the metadata that the Mac stores
with each file. This may sound like what you want, but it means you'll
get an auxiliary directory in each normal directory; the auxiliary
directory contains the files with the metadata.
