Can anyone tell me if HP fixed the problem with their ftp client
implementation in PP4 for 5.5, or do I have to go back to my
archives and retrieve a copy of the 5.0 ftp client?

According to HP, patch FTPFD17A will fix the PP4 problem with FTP.  It is
in General Release.
