i guess last week was a time for bad 'data karma' (got
that from the newspaper :-).  the drive that failed had
massive media damage and so was unrecoverable <sigh>

so, the question of the day is - does diskutil do
a 'better' job of recoverying file than store?  i've
got a post-crash backup tape of the volume set
that i can restore from (and probably will use to
put the directory back on the system...) but i'm
wondering if that's what i want to do....?    - d
