Jeff and other interested Listers:

I am almost a month behind in reading my digests so this news may have
already been communicated. CSY has begun a special program to address
this exact situation. A significant discount (Approx. 40%) is being
offered on the User License line item when you upgrade a 9x7 to a 9x9 or
99x system.

We (CDI) played a major role in working with CSY to promote and justify
this discount. We have many HP 3000 customers and have been hearing this
complaint for a longgg time. I know there is a time limit on this offer.
If you, or any other readers, would like more info, please send me a
note.

CDI is a HP DAR and Best-in-Class Channel Partner. We service the New
York Metro area and have a strong presence in the HP 3000 platform.

I too think that this borders on "criminal". If you do a board
swap
upgrade, you aren't charged (unless it results in a new "tier",
in which
case you get a tier upgrade "credit"). If you do a box swap,
you lose
everything from MPE/Image license. Zilch, zero, nada. But your
other
software still has at least credit, if not a direct transfer.

We had a 950 that went to a 960 for zilch software cost, but the
next
step up (also a board swap) to a 980 changes our tier. Hardware
cost
about $30K. Software cost about $80K. And we have *unlimited*
user
license on MPE and all software. You can't "downgrade" to a
lower
license level and get credit either.

So, against my wishes but by mandate of the powers-that-be, we
will not
upgrade and are migrating major applications to a 9000 (I hate
to admit
as owner of this list, but fact is fact). The 3000s will likely
hang
around for some applications, but we're moving.

Try justifying the pricing structure of the 3000 platform to
upper
management compared to 9000 pricing/marketing. Ron Seybold did
an
excellent editorial on the "true cost of a 9000" which did a
good job of
comparing entry level expenditures filling in the missing
"features" of
MPE that HP-UX lacks (backup, spooler, etc). But carry that
over to
upgrades and the model fails. Miserably. And we're talking
about the
        same hardware (essentially).
