Sendmail 8.8.8 (the latest public production release) is available for the
HP3000 at:

Looks like the sendmail that comes with HPUX 10.20 is stricter about what it
wants to see on the HELO command.  JTMAIL should be changed to supply a domain
name after HELO.

Probably the best solution is to install Sendmail/iX on your HP3000.  It will
generate proper HELO commands, and will queue the outgoing mail locally and
automatically retry if the destination machine is offline.
