The intent is to break programs that may be adding up all values in
a field, say SECTORS, and making decisions based on the sum.  At the
same time it is a visual cue to a human that the data could not be
displayed.  I prefer a single '*' asthetically, but a field-width of
asterisks has a higher likelyhood of breaking such a program.

I don't know of a "better" way to do this.
