I posted this to HP3000-L but was told it did not make it here. I was
asked to post it here also, so:
The HP replacement for the 293x printers is the P405, manufactured
by PSi GmbH in Germany and OEMed by HP. The HP product number is
PSYP405P. I have a included a few of the specifications for this printer
to address the issues of barcodes and multi-part forms.
The P405 is a 24 needle, serial impact dot matrix printer. It
represents a high performance, highly reliable printer offering a
sophisticated paper handling and various other features. The
basic
printer model is configured with Serial/ Parallel
interface, including Emulation of HP 293X and HP2235
printers.
It will handle six part stationery in a single pass.

The P405 provides the capability to process a wide range
of papers an form sets that is:
* Fanfold Paper
* Cut Sheets
* Transparencies
* Multipart Forms
* Envelopes and Labels
Following bar-codes are implemented:
* Code 39
* 2 of 5 industrial
* 2 of 5 interleaved
* Codabar
* EAN 8
* EAN 13
* Code 93
* MSI Mod 10/10
* UPC-E
* UPC-A
* Code 128 (EAN128)
* Postnet
