It won't work, so do not bother with quoting.

As soon as you do a reorganization of the detail datasets (through reload
or a 3rd party utility), the detail record addresses will be changed and
the transaction logfiles will not be able to be applied to the newly
reorganized dataset.

You need to be able to stop production, reorg the base, then restart
production. This is one of the big stumbling blocks for 7x24 operations
and is one of the reasons I am pushing for an on-line reorg/detpack. Read
the current SIGIMAGE newsletter.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

Subject: How do you Quote a 10 Gig Data Base Reload

I have been approached by an individual with a HP3000 that needs a 10
Gig Image Data Base reorganized.

I have a 917LX with enough Disk Space to do the reorganization. I
purchased 16 Gig of disk to do this and other miscellaneous projects. I
would like to recover some of the dollars spent on the 16 Gig's. This
individual did not ask me to purchase the drives.

 They DO NOT have:
 - the staff to do the job
 - the time
 - the disk space
 - CPU availability in-house
 - budget dollars approved to purchase a 3rd party utility or
 - budget dollars to rent a machine and/or an external mini-tower with
enough disk for the task

I don't know how long it will take to do a DBUNLOAD/DBLOAD on the
917LX. I don't know if there is even a way to calculate the time based
on the number of keys, key lengths, dataset lengths and the number of
characters for sorted keys, etc. This reorg might take a couple of days
on a stand-alone 917?

We are planning to do a complete test initially to see how long it
will take. We will then do a production run, copy the reorganized DB to
DAT or 6250 tape. We will hand deliver the tape and they will reload
the Data Base from tape and apply any transactions that have occurred
via a tape logging file. They would like to STORE the Data Base to tape
Friday night after 5 PM and then RESTORE and apply outstanding
transactions by Monday 7 AM.

Anyone know of a fair way to bid this job? A fair way of bidding by
the hour?

Any experience in a similar situation would help. All suggestions and
comments are appreciated.
