"="s at the end of lines are "soft" line terminators as used in quoted-
printable encoding. Modern mailers require that any line longer than the
(I forget the cutoff) be quoted-printable encoded to preserve the actual
line lengths/wrapping as entered by the sender. QP is also required if
any non-7-bit characters are sent in a text message (unless you uuencode or
base64 encode the whole message). Alot of the GUI mailers nowadays use QP
by default since they display very long lines on their screens, but mail
standards dictate that only the standard 72/80 character-per-line displays
be required.(This allows the long lines to be preserved where available, but
allows adequate presentation on narrower displays).

At any rate, the receiving mailer shouldn't be displaying these characters
if it's mime compatible (i.e. something's broken or misconfigured).
