I've known about this for ages, but never had occasion to use it until
     now, and boy is the manual bad.  Basically I have a "main" program and
     a series of subprograms that are all linked together into a single
     executable.  I want to open the files once in a single module, but
     have them available to the other modules.

     Anyone have any hints?
