That error means that the file PERL.PUB.PERL was somehow truncated.
You should :PURGE PERL.PUB.PERL (well, probably :PURGEACCT PERL) and try again.
If you can't get the tape copy to work, you could download a fresh Perl by
visiting:
http://www.cccd.edu/~markb/perlix.html
If the tape you're referring to is the IPROF98 tape, note that I haven't yet
had time to install it on my own systems, so I can't vouch for the integrity
of the Perl that might be there. The bad news is that I've been busy for
most of this week fighting off a spammer who is attacking my Netscape
Messaging Server; the good news is that I already have the Sendmail/iX
8.9.0Beta3 anti-spam release running on my porting machine. Watch for an
HP3000-L announcement soon.
