Interesting...I checked that on HP-UX (10.20) and also got 2048.

On our AIX machine, I have to use:   getconf LINE_MAX
(and I also get 2048)

Strangely enough, HP-UX type-ahead code doesn't appear to know about
_POSIX2_LINE_MAX, as the maximum amount you can type ahead is
777 characters.
