I run with the FAT file system on my NT 4 Server (SP 3), not the
NTFS. That saved me when I run into a critical NT bug of some
kind. (I'd tried to install RASxxxxx (I forget the xxxx part),
and the install said "some files missing", and then tried to reboot
NT ... it never came back, but endlessly rebooted over and over.)

Even the ERD wasn't getting very far.

Because my C: drive is FAT, I was able to boot from an old DOS
floppy and go in and edit/rename/delete some files that were
causing the problem, and I eventually recovered without losing
any data.

Yes, I know that NTFS supposedly has better integrity ...
but that would have left me s.o.l.
