At the cost of possibly doing something not so kosher - but in the interest
of getting it on the "List" so that those who do not subscribe via Netnews
can see this - here is Harry Sterling's a post:

To all 3000L readers:

It was brought to my attention that there was some concern over HP's
recent annual report. I don't have a lot of input on what goes into our
annual report, but believe me, there are many, many successful
businesses in HP and not all of them can be included.

I also read with interest that you seem pleased with what we have done
in CSY over the past three years. Thanks for your suppport. As Tony
Furnivall stated, I do keep my pulse on what you our customers are
saying. I don't always have a chance to check 3000L on a regular basis,
but some of my CSY folks do and they let me know of any concerns. Today
I decided to scan the comments which prompted this message.

Just to let you know, there is a great deal of support for the HP3000
business within HP these days. My group manager is very please with the
business results, but more important with the high level of customer
satisfaction he hears from our HP3000 customers and business partners.

My real personal measure of success is what all of you say about us in
CSY and what you say about our products and services. Thanks for all of
your recent positive comments.

One of the comments I have heard in the past was concern that "upper
level managers" in HP don't really know what's going on with the HP3000
business. Believe me, they do. There was an important validating event
which just occurred within HP several weeks ago that I wanted to share
with you. CSY, along with 9 other business entites in HP, was awarded
the Presidents Quality Award for 1997. We were nominated for this award
by Bill Russell, the ESG group manager (my boss). The nominees were
selected by Lew Platt's management council and Lew Platt personally
presented me the award (as the CSY representative) at this year's
General Managers meeting which was held the end of January. The award
is given to businees entities who have achieved sustained business
results, have a high level of customer satisfaction and high employee
morale. This was a real statement of confidence in what we have been
able to accomplish over these past several years. I am personally very
proud of the people of CSY who made this possible, but more importantly,
I am very proud of you our customers who are the ones who really make it
happen, by continuing to purchase our products and helping us understand
you on-going business needs. You will be hearing more about the award
over the next several months and you will notice a new president's
quality award logo on our presentations over the next year.

Thanks to all of you for your continued support - and yes I am
listening.

Humbly, Harry Sterling
