Hey! Be fair! These are tools, and some tools do some things better than
others. Sure, some of the MPE utilities do things poorly, or not at all.
But I always like to at least know how to get things done with what
ships on the box, just in case I don't have beloved utilities, or at
least to be glad that I don't * have * to do it that way ;-) .

I needed to clean out a bunch of IMAGE databases and NM KSAM files (as
recently posted), and DBUTIL ERASE and FILE PURGEME,OLD;SAVE then PURGE
*PURGEME did what I needed, and did it quickly. As for clearing out all
of the datasets in several databases, I think that DBUTIL did what I
needed as well and faster than any other approach I know of (although if
there is an even better approach, I am open to it).

Sure, we use Adager here, and SuprTool, both of which have saved my...
um, task at hand, more times than I can count. I count them among the
trio utilities must haves, along with VeSoft's offerings. I am anxiously
awaiting our purchase req for the Adager Console to make it thru the
plumbing, as I expect it to simplify my life further. And a co-worker
has used DBGeneral, and makes it clear that he misses it. Buy the
third-party utilities, by all means, but don't fail to learn what you
already have.
