As far as I remember from my HP days, 950s-980s can be upgraded to boot
from SCSI. 925s, 935s and 949 just can't. There was a document (accessible
only internally from HP that explictly stated this.

If my memory does not betray me (OK, aging is not a graceful process ...),
950s, 955s and 960s need to have PDC rev. 3.56 and IODC at least rev. 8. No
way for the smaller 925s, 935s and 949s. I am unsure about the PDC for
980s, they don't seem to have exactly the same rev numbers.

Hint : the IODC upgrade for 950s, 955s and 960s was something like $7,000.

Can anyone from HP confirm all this ?

Yes...a 9x5 machine needs a ROM upgrade to be able to boot from
SCSI. (On the HP-UX side, the same is true for 8x5 machines.)

We have several 9x5/8x5 machines with SCSI interfaces that can't
be booted from.

I'm not 100% sure, but I seem to recall that the
last time we tried to ask HP how much the upgrade ROM was,
we were told (1) it wasn't available; (2) it was available,
but only HP can install it (not us); (3) it was cheaper to
buy a used 9x7 (or 8x7) than to try to buy the upgrade.
(And it took a month or so to discover that!)
