I won't argue with your points on the graphics capabilities of PC's,
because I don't know enough about that, but as a platform for general
processing the problem with Intel based PC's is the operating system,
not the processors. If you've ever played with Linux on a 486-33 or
faster, you'll see that the processors are much more capable than what
the OS du jour gets out of them.
I'm not saying that they are in the same class as proper
workstation/server systems, but they are much more capable than people
realize.
