Pat, your turn of phrase is perfect. "Very short sighted" very nicely
wraps up Cognos' approach to the the Powerhouse product line for many,
many years. It is almost as if they kept expecting the market for
developer tools to die after next quarter.
Imagine a product strategy: buy just about best 4GL developer tools
around in the early life cycle of a platform, then milk the living
daylights out of it (invest in ports to every other platform and
database in sight, charge a *lot* for migrations and upgrades from the
poor souls that *use* your product, but don't invest any more than you
can possibly avoid in core product development, or integration of tools,
or even keeping up with the functionality of the platform that gave
birth to the product, etc.).
