This is a long shot on your JAVA problem but ....

I've had similar problems in Beta Testing on the ALLBASE products which
also run on HP-UX. For some reason, ACD's seem to get in the way even if
they 'look' OK. RESTORE ing the files from a backup tape with the NOACD
option seems to clear up this ugliness.

I've never tried to isolate the problem, but I suspect it is some MPE/POSIX
interoperability problem. It's painless so it might be worth a try.
