For all of you you are still following this thread (both of you!), he's the

rather tame denouement:

We replaced all coax in the PC LAN with 10BaseT and voila!  The network is 
networkin' again.

Thanks to all who responded with their wisdom in my time of need.  And for 
everyone else struggling with 10Base2:  "They" are right!  Replace it with 
10BaseT!
