I've been watching AIT drives for a little while too. At last count there
were 3 vendors that I've seen advertising the technology: Sony, Seagate,
and Cybernetics.

I know of at least one company that's selling a backup solution based on
AIT drives. I looked at it briefly, but since there's presently only one
vendor of the technology, it didn't seem likely to become a standard. I'm
looking for a medium that's likely to be useful for interchange far into
the future -- sort of the 9-track of the 90's -- so AIT wasn't a good
fit. The AIT drive did have higher performance than the DLT solution from
the same vendor.

PS. Yes, I know that other single-vendor solutions have become successful
(Iomega Zip, for example), but those are the exception.
