Hi Wolfgang, *12/2/97*

Thanks for your response to the problems I had installing Express-3
using Patch/iX, where "enhancements" like ODBCLINK/SE DO NOT
Automatically Qualify for installation.

How about an enhancement to Patch/iX that asks you the following
question when you hit the "QUALIFY" button:

"Would you like to Auto-Qualify all ENHANCEMENT PATCHES,
rather than have to 'force' them manually? Typically you might
want this option when installing an "Express-x" Powerpatch."

If you answer YES to this option, Patch/iX would Auto-Qualify
any "enhancement" patch that is safe to install on your system.

The way things are now, an awful lot of people are going to have
trouble going thru the Patch/iX Qualification screen patch-by-patch,
going to the detail screen for each one to see if it says "enhancements
must be forced", and "forcing" them manually, forever nervous that
they're going to make some sort of mistake and force the wrong thing.
By the way, the documentation page you referred to named "Software
Products and Dependent Patches" DOES NOT tell you which ones
are ENHANCEMENTS. I believe that the Patch/iX could be improved
as suggested above to make it easier to properly install EXPRESS
releases.

Subject: Patch/iX problems with 5.5 Express-3

)The HPRC just told me there's a known problem with Patch/iX NOT
)properly qualifying all Mpe/iX 5.5 EXPRESS-3 patches. I had noticed
)that several Patches did not install, but didn't really know that a Patch/iX
)bug was involved.

sorry, but no Patch/iX bug is involved.
'Read Before Installing' delivered with MPE/iX 5.5 Express 3
contains on Page 13 - Product Tables and Dependent Patches
following Note:
---------------------------------------------
Enhancement patches are included in this PowerPatch. These patches will not
qualify for automatic installation. To install these patches with
HP Patch/iX, they will need to be "forced" on. The following patch tables
document all the patches included in this PowerPatch.
Using Patch/iX will indicate which patch automatically qualify for
installation on your system.
---------------------------------------------
MPE/iX 5.5 Express 3 enhancement patches are:

ATCJXQ6, COBJXW6, MPEJXR6, ODIJXJ0, OFDJXK5,
SQLJXR2, TIXJXU4
and dependent patches (not qualifying) are:
MPEJXL8, VGFEDQ9.

the key patch for ODBCLINK/SE
)(SQLJXR2B) DID NOT INSTALL, so I really don't have ODBCLINK! Also,
)MPEJXR6C (the new Listf,ACCESS feature) DID NOT INSTALL - one HPRC
)guy said that this was OK because the LISTF,ACCESS feature "didn't
)make it into Express-3" (even though it's in the Exp-3 Communicator?!! -
)can some verify this for me?). I've got another call into HPRC to help
)me go back thru all the Patch/iX "Non-Qualified's" to figure out which
)others ones s/b "Force Installed". Just wanted everybody to be aware
)of the problem - I wish I had known, because this Patch/iX process, as
)nice as it is conceptually, is time-consuming and not something I look
)forward to doing again for no reason. Anyone else have this happen to
)them???
