years). However, I admit to not knowing for sure whether the magic is
the trailing LF or the trailing NULL. I can make a good argument for

Yeah; what I posted is the info I got from the RC years ago but, based on
the evidence, it sounds like the real requirement is for the CR, and
what's after it is ignored. Which is actually more consistent with the
"manual" method; the console terminal doesn't "manufacture" an LF when an
operator presses CR; whether a CR is echoed as a CR or a CR/LF pair is up
to what's on the other end.
