Hi,
i think, your problem resides from missing ip-routing entries.
To fix this, you should try to ping the hp3000 from the smtp-gateway. If this does not work, you will have to add an entry in the routing-table on the gateway.
Try the same from the 3000 to the gateway.
If you manage, to get the connection(ping) from both sides, you should also be able to send email!

Stan,
I've loaded the mail program and tried to run it. I get a Socket
IPRECV time out error. I've configured DNS (which works) and also
have the NT SMTP gateway loaded in NMMGR directory. The HP-9000 sends
to the gateway without any problem. This shop doesn't have any
Telamon products so I'm can't get any support and I don't know where
to get documentation for the program. What is missing?

Yes. Telamon has a mail program that does it, free. Works well.
Check: ftp://ftp.telamon.com/dist/mail.nm
