DISCFREE A shows the amount of free space on a disc in a histogram
format.
It does not take into account whether the free space is transient or
permanent and this is where I think your problem lies.

Although you had 1.8 million sectors free most of this was probably
transient space. On a small machine here DISCFREE A showed that I had
3468752 sectors free on ldev 1 of which 3212800 was in 2 blocks of >
100000. When looking at DISCFREE B however I only had 2412128 available
to permanent space.

As a precaution I always build the AXLDEV files a few days before and
whilst the system is in use. This way I have time to archive or move
files around without having to worry on the day.
