Hmmm.

Wasn't there a slight difference between 9144 cartridge media and QIC media?

I vaguely recall, that one has all the tape on the right spindle while the
other one has all the tape on the left spindle (or vice verse). Way back I
inserted a QIC media into a 9144 drive (by accident) and it did make some
rather frightening noise when trying to (re)wind the tape to its "ready"
position...
