My current guess is that the applet needs to be signed because it will offer
Telnet as well as NS/VT for connecting to any host (not just the home server).

If my guess is true, then I wonder if a version or option of Javelin would
be possible that only permits the applet to connect back to the web server
it originates from (which could/should be an HP 3000 then)... This would
remove the need for code-signing and thus also work with a variety of other
(java enabled) web browsers...
