More importantly, why would the end of the world depend upon ASCII code?

It was a derivative of Baudot code, which in turn came from Morse code.

Has anyone tried coding Bill Gates vs. EBCDIC?!?!?!?

Additionally, why would anything that is an "American Standard" have
anything to do with it? What makes it more important than Cyrillic,
Chinese, Japanese or Spanish?
