Okay, first I am assuming that you mean the "old" ACCEPT <var> FROM DATE 
or TIME, and not the "newer" Cobol 85 functions.  According to the 
Cobol II/XL Reference Manual (from July 1991!), the date, day, day 
of the week, or time is from the internal software clock, not the 
hardware clock.

Now, the Cobol 85 function CURRENT-DATE does return the hardware date 
and time.
