Yahoo has a press release about Merced at
        <http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/97/10/14/hwp_intc_1.html>

HP and Intel have defined EPIC technology (Explicitly Parallel Instruction
Computing) as the foundation for Merced. The article above provides a brief
overview of this.

Interestingly, the article also contains the statement

        "The first microprocessor based on IA-64 -- code-named Merced --
         is an Intel product being designed, manufactured, and marketed
         by Intel, and is scheduled for production in 1999."

This doesn't appear to leave much room for HP.
