AFAIK, the beeping "problem" occurs primarily (only?) with HP 2392
terminals.  Later terminals didn't beep when the status line is
updated.  (Eariler terminals didn't have a status line)

Many people were annoyed by the 2392 beeping ... enough so that
HP fixed it by patching the firmware of the 2392.
Ask your hardware support people for the updated firmware for the
HP 2392 to remove the beeping.
