Response to Guy Smith's post on this thread:

We demo'd RR last year and had a pretty difficult time of it. I think RR's
command syntax is unnecessarily complex. They still don't support DLT
on
MPE, AFAIK, and I see very little in the way of progress for
enhancements
for RR/MPE - as an illustration, their web page for this product has not
been updated for quite some time, but the "open systems" products'
pages
seem to be kept more current. I just received a mailing from them as a
result of a visit to their HP World '97 booth, and all they sent me was
info re: Unix versions of their products. <sigh>

Lee, I don't know about the demo you got from Unison on Roadrunner,
but we have been using Back Pack/Roadrunner for 10 years and haven't
had problems using the latest media types. We are on RR version 4.6.7
on a 5.5 system backing up 64GB to 3 DLT each on their own SCSI
controller card. We haven't had any problems with RR and DLT, except
that you must put a Density=1600 on your file equate for tape.

As far as the RR native syntax goes, you have the option of using the
Store/Restore syntax by running RR.PUB.TYM;PARM=1 and then just
entering your standard store syntax. You can also specify the keyword
"translate=<your filename>", and you will get a file containing native
syntax. In the beginning, I hated the native syntax and could never
remember it, but gradually, I learned the few always used commands.
However one thing the syntax has that a single line command doesn't
have is the ability to be very creative. For example,

<rr> select (@.pub.sys where moddate >= 09/25/97)
<rr> select (@.prog.acct where moddate >=08/01/97)

  or on a restore

<rr> select @[log in to unmask]
<rr> change group g1 to h1
<rr> change group g2 to i9
<rr> change account myacct to acct2

Try and do this on a single line command.
