I had a reply about TAPELABL in the CSL.
This uses privmode to change the value a BANK 0 memory loc on CLASSIC boxes to
enable/disable AVR.

I was looking for a method on MPE/iX boxes. But have found a (better, IMHO) method.
If I FOPEN the tape as READ/WRITE, then MPE lets me read the labels of labeled tapes.
You do not have to have a write-ring on the tape.
You do have to answer another console request of
   OK to scratch volume ?????? (Y/N)
to which you reply, Y
