I always recommend Bruce Tobacks excellent weekly HP3000-L summaries
which can be found below http://www.interex.org in such situations.

I'm not sure as I'm not at the office at present, but doesn't the
Posix Shell offer a crypt command related to the crypt library call?
This will most probably be the same across different Posix systems.

No idea how safe or suitable it is. At least it's cheap.
