The confusion stems from the fact that "legacy system" has two
diametrically opposite meanings, neither of which has anything to do with
the colloquial meaning of "legacy". To an IS manager, it means, "a system
working well enough to pass on to my successor." To a vendor, it means "a
system my prospect has that I want to displace."
