DOH!!
Boy, do I feel stupid! Here's an FCOPY of the file (as suggested by
Ken Vickers and implied by Geoff Harper):
:FCOPY FROM=BKUPERR.PUB.UTIL;TO=;HEX;CHAR
HP31900A.05.02 FILE COPIER (C) HEWLETT-PACKARD CO. 1990
BKUPERR.PUB.UTIL RECORD 0 (%0, #0)
0000: 4D50 4520 5345 4355 5249 5459 2056 494F MPE SECURITY VIO
0008: 4C41 5449 4F4E 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 LATION
0010: SAME: TO 0028-1
EOF FOUND IN FROMFILE AFTER RECORD 0
1 RECORD PROCESSED *** 0 ERRORS
END OF SUBSYSTEM
The actual contents of the file is one record containing the error
from last night's backup stream (just as it's supposed to). The
error was "MPE SECURITY VIOLATION". Thanks for everyone's help
on this blunder.
