One option would be to bring up a Samba server on the
DEC Alpha systems, and a Samba/iX server on the 996.
You would then be able to use the smbclient utility to access
shares on either system, perform file transfers, etc. You would
not be able to "mount" the filesystem on the DEC server by
the 996, it would only be accessible through smbclient.

Subject: [HP3000-L] Alternatives to NFS - HP 3000 996 to DEC Alpha

We are converting from two DEC Alpha's to a 996/2 and want to look at
the data on the Alpha.

While NFS is a option, I am wondering if others exist.

We use NFS to talk to the NT network. Servers are running 4.0 and
clients are running Windows 3.1 thru 95, and NT client.

We currently FTP between machines but being able to mount the drives on
the Alpha would be a great help.
