I hate to burst your balloon, but this is probably a bad assumption.  I
believe the "standard" these days for telephone installations is cat 3.
This should be more than adequate for 56KB (I use it for my ISDN connection
which is about 144KB), but not for a 10MB network connection.  It should be
fairly obvious by looking at the "twists per inch" on the cable.  Also, you
can check your error-rate over the cable and whether you are picking up any
interference on the analog lines (I presume tne other 48 pairs are being
used for something).
