Consistent? Years? The *ONLY* thing that's been consistent is
the lack of understandability.

And the C is? Of course, that *is* the left-most (and, in English,
generally the most important) part of the version ID.

Which includes many people on HP3000-L.

Interesting suggestion. That would certainly clear up the problems
faced by many, perhaps most, users.

Maybe for the same reason you did the following:

I.e., it provides useful information.

Jon...I simply won't waste bandwidth re-explaining the various problems in
the version numbering scheme (now and over the years ... but can
you say "4.5", "5.0 push", "5.0 pull", 6.0 (oops, 5.5?) ).

Heck...just *LOOK* at the 5.5 SHOWME middle thing ... users who haven't
read your posting will say: am I on 5.5 or 5.0? Or C.5?

Check HP3000-L archives from a year ago, when you'll see that HP formed a
committee of users and internal people to address the problem.
Unfortunately, one user became an HP employee (Hi Larry!), and the
committee seemed to disappear. (I was on it, and I still don't know
what happened!) Part of it was to address numbering systems, SHOWME,
Build IDs, and public release numbers. Oh well.
