Evan,
I was in San Jose airport yesterday and there was a booth set up for
wireless internet access. It was provided by Metrocom in the San Jose area
and they have other areas done too. It's a private radio network, not
cellular or PCS, but in the 900 mHz range. The signal is supposedly RSA
encrypted and the transmitter output is minimal - like 1W or something
like that.
Sounds neat - they are offering it for a flat $29.99 per month. The
transmitter is about $299 to buy (or $15 a month for a year with a $125
buyout lease). The throughput was a little disappointing though - it can
fluxuate between 14.4 and 28.8, although they are working on throughput in
the 85K by years end.
Something to ponder, I guess
(and Nick - the DC area is also wired for this <g>)
Cheers,
Joe
