As I'm catching up on e-mail several people have asked what happened to
the list, where is my mail, etc. You probably have a big pile of mail
in front of this message now :-)

Our cisco 7000 lost its Switch Processor module last night ~6:30 PM (I
will skip the long story of chasing bizarre network problems around
campus until very late last night and continuing this morning). All 8
network segments attached to the 7000 were isolated from each other and
the internet, raven was among those affected.

Once the cause was determined, I "rigged" a workaround using some
available cisco switch ports in our catalyst and a free 100Mb router
port (the "router on a stick" configuration, for network-nerds out
there) to offload the 7000 until replacement parts arrive.

This should get us through the weekend and I don't expect any further
interruption Monday when the 7000 will be fixed as we had planned to
move raven's segment to the new gear anyway [a weekend would have been
preferable to a rushed couple of hours with the phones ringing off the
hook, however :-)]

It has been a long day. TGIF!
