We use ODBC as well as other middleware products.
MB Foster has an excellent implementation of ODBC
and if ODBC is the right choice for your application, then
I would heartily recommend it.

What is your application?  How many users are there logged
on at any given time?  What kind of host are you using?
What are the retreival characteristics, are you accessing only
one table at a time?  Are you joining multiple tables?  It may
be that you are better off copying portions of your database
to another database and doing extracts from it (like a
datawarehousing application).

It is entirely possible that ODBC is inherently incapable of
performing the function you would like it to do.  However, there
is no way to tell without more information.
