I have an intermittent problem running FTP on a 3 processor HP3000.
Every three to four weeks one of our FTP jobs crash because it can not
access the NETRC file (where all of the parameters for the remote
system are stored). The system log file states in its error message
that "The file could not be opened because the file is being store, or
is opened in a way that does not allow additional write access (FILE
OPEN ERROR -456)" This is presumably because the prior FTP job still
has hold of the NETRC file.

HP advise that in the source of FTP, the NETRC file is opened in
     shared mode.

Has anyone experienced this problem or can they suggest a workaround?

     TIA
