I work for a Electric Company and currently we us a remote meter
reading system that transmits on an ultra low frequency from the meter
along the power line to a receiver at the sub station. The use of the
low frequency allows transparent transmission along the power line.
The drawback to using this frequency is that transmissions are slow
and therefore are monitored 24hr a day.
